This study is to develop an assessment model of parent and child interaction through the observation in free play situation. When a child is referred in play therapy, therapists gathered the information from taking psychological test and observing the child¡¯s behavior, and asking the parents about their children. Because the present problems of children were influenced from parent¡¯s child caring attitude and the relation of parents and children, play therapists must know the information about parent-child interaction when they want to establish the therapy goal and therapeutic intervention. This study had two steps. First, it was analyzed the 24 taped recording films about mother-child interaction in free play situation. Subjects were 18 preschool child-mother dyads who were referred in play therapy because of emotional or developmental problems. Second, it was suggested an assessment model of parent-child interaction after analyzing the 24 taped recording films. The contents of an assessment model of parent-child interaction are consisted with observing and evaluating an initiation of play, emotional bonding of parent-child, playful of play, and play together with parent and child in free-play situation.
